Effects of the Cold War Essay - 1782 Words

A substantial amount of people consider John F. Kennedy to be one of the greatest presidents of all time due to his involvement in the Cold War. The Cold War is a period of time dating back between the late 1940’s to the early 1990’s in which America’s preeminent concern, was containing the Soviet Union and their morals on spreading communism. Considering that the Cold War lasted around forty some years, there are many short terms and long terms effects that go along with it. While the effects of the Cold War seemed to be drastic it actually was a war in which no shots were fired. The main reason America decided to get involved in starting the Cold War was to try to contain communism. During the Cold War, the United States’ weapons†¦show more content†¦The agreement was that in exchange for the Soviets dismantling their arsenal in Cuba, America would not invade it. (Cuban Missile Crisis.). Another deal that Kennedy made that people did not figure out until about twenty-five years later was that Kennedy as well took down the missiles America had in Turkey at the time. Kennedy did not publicize this action because he felt it would make him look less macilent to the American people and he feared that the Soviet’s would take this to their advantage. Had this information gotten out, it could have sparked another altercation between America and the Soviet Union (The Cold War Museum.). With America intervening, it also created many different alliances. These alliances were formed to help either the Soviets or the Americans during and throughout the war. Alliances like the NATO and the Warsaw Pact both were put in place affecting other countries to get involved in the war. The NATO was the North Atlantic Treaty Organizations which included the United States, Canada, Iceland, Italy, Norway, and Portugal. They sought to help one another throughout the war and exchange advice, hardware, and expertise. In response to the creation of the NATO the Soviets formed the Warsaw Pact. This pact had the same motives as the NATO except it was consisted of the Soviets, Poland, East Germany, Hungary, and Romania.
